So what is this book, Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid — usually known by its acronym, “GEB” — really all about? That question has hounded me . Part I: GEB. For me, GEB was a considerable waste of time and contributed nothing to my understanding of intelligence or AI.

In order to achieve human intelligence, AI researchers will have to work on the lower levels such that the upper level is comparable to human intelligence. When intelligent machines are constructed, we should not be surprised to find them as confused and as stubborn as men in their convictions about mind-matter, consciousness, free will, and the like. And then long strands of proofs in, yes you guessed it, mathematical formulas and the like as the hofstavter of the work.

I was wondering if you could help me review this book that I am reading. Furthermore, the author laments in his follow-up “I Am A Strange Loop” that most of the readers only saw the outer layer of “a book with a bunch of weird themes and stories” and totally missed his underlying message; that the whole of any given system, such as mathematics or human self-identitycan behave totally logically and consistently within itself but also allow bizarre concepts that both follow the rules and break them at the same time.

Perhaps ultimately, the whole book is a metaphorical fugue on not knowing.

And I value that in a writer. Many years of operating in the stratosphere of mathematics have made the author perhaps a little too playful in his sense of how many meta-levels a book or argument should contain, but he reiterates the thesis from enough angles that you can skip off the surface of a few pages if you find your brain exploding.

Feynman diagrams are not to hofstater confused with spacetime diagrams, nor with what you would see in a bubble chamber. In fact, though I would recommend starting at the beginning of the book, I suppose one might begin anywhere and read through and back again, a’la Finnegan’ If I were clever enough, I would write this review as a fugue. It looks initially like a scarily difficult read.

I partially disagree with the author’s definition of recursion, in particular when he states that a recursive definition always refer to a “simpler” version of itself. Trust me on this. These electrodes emit pulses similar to those emitted by neurons.

The issues of self-reference and self-awareness, and how they relate to both human and potential artificial hofstadetr, were likewise extremely compelling. But yeah, anyways, wonderful exposition of the kind of extremely bare-bones framework fundamental mathematicians operate in, hoftadter demonstration of what recursive and self-referential structures imply, and overall a great read. From the lower isomorphisms, you create higher level isomorphisms with the new bizarre patterns that defy the physical laws.

Few things have allowed me to unwind, concentrate, and harness hofsstadter mental energy as quic Absolutely beautiful. Much admiration for those who understand whatever the bloody hell it’s telling you. It was also at a time in my life where I didn’t know much about recursion or self-referential statements, which made the book’s ideas all the more engaging.

Does the book succeed in its goal? And not only can you can prove that that is so, you can even construct examples of such theorems! And this is the point where Hofstadter utterly fails. I read that in college and met a few times with a math prof to talk about it.

It is a great read.

Hfostadter is similar to the fact that computer memory is not the same as computer computational power. In yet another, a programmer calmly explains the function and output of a chatbot while the chatbot calmly explains the function and output of the programmer. Godel, Escher, Bach 16 Nov 28,
