The book is clever, and definitely worth a read. This read was a surprise for me. Thank you for your feedback.
The narrator feels his girlfriend stiffen and grow tense — her uncle and comebscks both died in the civil war and in the Troubles since. On a spur of moment, he ends up going fishing in the sea and for the first time in his life, finds something that is not worth giving up. I find this story seriously irritating.

And the sudden ironic reversal at the end of the story looks forward to other unexpected reversals in Forsyth, specifically when timid or non-descript men turn out to have a powerful and violent Army past — notably the twist in the tail of The Veteranfrom 20 years later which, despite myself, I found myself liking. One day he finds trederick magazine stuffed under his seat which advertises the services of, ahem, women of ill repute.
No-one will read this one and then fail to mention “No snakes in Ireland”, which is wonderful, but there are 9 more great ones as well. He then phones the editors of every national and local newspaper in London, suggesting they send a journalist to the court for an entertaining session.
He uses a similar turn of irony in these stories. His first full length novel, The Day of the Jackal, was published comwbacks and became an international bestseller and gained its author the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Novel. IMHO, the most satisfying are “The Emperor” a bit of “The Old Man and the Sea” meets “The Taming of the Shrew” for lack of a better analogy and “Privilege” it’s great to see an uppity, seemingly untouchable mainstream media journalist get his comeuppance and poetic justice.

Goodread only if you have loved reading Forsyth previously as his habit of meticulously detailing a crime and happening of a crime can bore you to death!!!

But the most perfect plans can go awry, and this one does in a way that the one who gave the fredeick and contract rather than the one who carried it out will repent for ever – “don’t worry, there will be no comebacks” the killer assures him.
And so, after the boat has docked and the South African taken Murgatroyd to the local hospital where he is covered in anti-burn cream, his hands bandaged, his shoulder put in a sling and generally fixed up after his ordeal — Murgatroyd returns to the hotel to find the story of his exploit has preceded him and he is greeted like a hero, cheered by the crowd of holidaymakers all the way to the steps to his apartment.
Thus the hiring of the hitman in the first story reads like a forsyt on how to do just that. He has taken care to inform all other major newspapers that they can expect something sensational, so his words are taken down verbatim and are likely to spread around widely, even published verbatim.
