Like a scale, an arpeggio is linear: Besides using them for speed in playing, arpeggios add a kick to improvisation skills. As guitarists we like to look at scale patterns as you have seen in previous lessons.

Arpeggios create a fast, flowing sound. Experiment with each way of playing these arpeggios to see which one works best for you and your particular style. Because an arpeggio contains all the notes of its chord, you can use them in your solos and link them to what’s going on in the chord structure beneath you to create cool sounding licks.



Sometimes you might stray away arpsgios the chord tones, but chord tones act as the base on which solos are derived. To form arpeggio patterns, you must first pick a chord that you want to write in an arpeggio pattern.

For example a C minor 7 chord is a C minor chord when the 7th is taken away. To locate a C major 7 chord using the pattern above, all you have to do is take one note from each color and play it by fretting those notes.
